A walk-behind diamond floor grinder connected by a hose to a dust extractor on a garage slab, half of it ground pale and even, half still dark and stained, with the walls masked in plastic

Epoxy floor installation is a fixed sequence (test, grind, repair, prime, coat, broadcast, topcoat, cure), and in Huntington the moisture in the slab, the temperature and the coating's data sheet decide how long it takes. Sherwin-Williams' data sheet for ArmorSeal 1000 HS, a two-component epoxy floor coating (revised August 10, 2021), gives foot traffic at 24 hours at 77 degrees F and at 48 hours at 50 degrees F. NOAA's 1991-2020 normals for Centerport, inside the Town of Huntington, give a normal January high of 37.9 degrees F outdoors. This page walks the job in order, then sets a consumer kit's own data sheet beside it, so you can weigh doing the work against hiring it.

Typical published range

$4 to $10 per sq ft installed; premade DIY kits $200 to $700; national (HomeGuide, Feb 2026)

Full pricing guide

HomeGuide's February 2026 survey puts installed epoxy flooring at $4 to $10 per square foot and premade DIY kits at $200 to $700, both national. This Old House (updated March 2026) gives $2 to $5 per square foot for DIY projects and $3 to $12 for hired work, also national. Angi's August 2026 page names what moves the price: resin type, floor size and surface preparation. No survey publishes a Huntington, Suffolk County or Long Island price, so these are national ranges, not our quote. The full tables are on our epoxy flooring cost page.

An installed flake floor is several coats, each with a printed thickness. Sherwin-Williams' application instructions for its Resuflor Deco Flake SB system (dated 1/25) run in this order: an epoxy primer coat at 3 to 5 mils (thousandths of an inch); an epoxy base coat at 10 to 12 mils; decorative flake broadcast to excess into the wet base coat at 0.2 pounds per square foot; a sweep and vacuum; an epoxy grout coat at 16 mils; and a urethane seal coat. That is one maker's build. We install more than one: a two-part epoxy base with a flake broadcast and a clear polyaspartic topcoat, an all-polyurea and polyaspartic system for a shorter return to service, and a moisture-mitigating epoxy primer under either where the slab calls for it. Layers by garage size are on our garage floor epoxy page.

The coats come last. We test the slab for moisture before we choose a system, because the makers set their limits by named tests. Sherwin-Williams Form G-1 (revised 02/26) sets two: not more than 3 pounds of moisture per 1,000 square feet per 24 hours by the calcium chloride test, ASTM F1869, and 80% or lower by relative humidity probes in the slab, ASTM F2170. A calcium chloride dome stays down 60-72 hours (KTA-Tator), so that test starts days before the job. Next we grind the slab with diamond tooling to a concrete surface profile, the roughness a slab is given so a coating can grip it, under the dust controls OSHA's silica rule names. Cracks, holes and gouges are repaired before any coating; for moving joints (construction, expansion and isolation joints) Sherwin-Williams recommends a sawcut through the finished floor and warns that coating over them "can lead to cracks in the surface". A scaled, pitted or badly cracked slab is a repair job first: see our concrete resurfacing page.

Before we arrive, you empty the room to the walls. Bob Vila's cost page (updated April 26, 2024) gives the pace: "a day to prep, a day to coat the flooring, and another day to seal it". We run the grinders on weekdays between 7:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m., the hours Town of Huntington Code section 141-4 sets for building work; its weekdays exclude Saturday, Sunday and legal holidays. How soon the next coat follows depends on the base coat: Laticrete's Spartacote chip guideline, TDS 432, lets its polyaspartic base dry "typically 1-2 hours" before the scrape, while Westcoat's sheet for its EC-36 epoxy allows a recoat "as soon as the surface is dry to touch or in about 8-10 hours". After the topcoat, the floor stays closed until the foot and vehicle traffic times on the product's sheet.

For a free written quote we need four things: the room's length and width; what is on the slab now (sealer, paint or an old coating); what you can see (cracks, pitting, damp patches, oil stains); and how soon you need the room back. We then visit, measure and test. Our written contract gives the start and completion dates and the cost of labor and materials, as Suffolk County Code section 563-21 requires, and names the coating products, as New York's General Business Law section 771 requires. The County requires a home improvement license for work on one- and two-family houses, and the license number must appear in the contractor's advertising (section 563-17(D)); ask any contractor for the number.

What your slab tells you before any epoxy is mixed

Whoever does the work, the slab sets the terms: Wolverine Coatings' bulletin says a coating's bond can be no stronger than the surface it is applied to. Each condition below is one you can see or test yourself; several fall outside a consumer kit's data sheet.

  • Water beads on the slab: Sika's water drop test, ASTM F3191, classes concrete that takes more than 1 minute to absorb a drop as non-porous, and the EpoxyShield kit's sheet asks for a floor free of sealers.
  • Concrete darkens under a taped sheet: Rust-Oleum's basement kit data, ESH-08, has you tape 4 mil plastic, 18x18 in., to bare concrete for 24 hours; darker means damp, so allow 10-14 days and repeat.
  • Old paint, sealer or a coating is on the floor: Sherwin-Williams lists previously coated floors and floors with sealers among those that need special preparation techniques before epoxy.
  • The room cannot be held at 50 degrees F: that is the minimum application temperature on the ArmorSeal 1000 HS and Westcoat EC-36 epoxy sheets, and the EpoxyShield kit's minimum is 60.

Surface profile: why we grind, and OSHA's rule for the dust

We grind the slab with diamond tooling instead of acid etching it, because the two methods leave different profiles and remove different things. ICRI Guideline 310.2R grades prepared concrete by concrete surface profile, CSP 1 to CSP 10, and names each grade by the method that typically produces it: CSP 1 is acid-etched, CSP 2 is grinding, CSP 3 is a light shotblast. Sherwin-Williams' technical article on etching says acid "tends to produce a CSP-1 to CSP-2 profile, which is suitable only for very thin systems" and "cannot remove curing compounds or many contaminants found in industrial settings". The system sets the profile: Wolverine Coatings' bulletin on preparing concrete (Rev 230913) matches films of 4 to 10 mils to CSP 1-3 and films of 10 to 40 mils to CSP 3-5, and Sherwin-Williams Form G-1 lists its own flake broadcast systems at CSP 5.

Form G-1 also says diamond grinders come with multiple grit options and are "capable of achieving a wide range of concrete surface profiles". We prepare the slab to the profile named on the chosen system's data sheet. Grinding concrete raises respirable crystalline silica, and Table 1 of the federal rule, OSHA's 29 CFR 1926.1153, gives floor grinders two controls: a machine that continuously feeds water to the cutting surface, or a dust collection system with a filter of 99% or greater efficiency and a filter-cleaning mechanism. Our walk-behind grinders run with dust collection, and indoors we remove loose dust between passes with a HEPA-filtered vacuum, as the table requires.

Pot life, recoat and traffic times beside Centerport's normals

A data sheet prints its pot life, recoat and traffic times at a stated temperature, and in a colder room every one of them is longer. At 50 and at 77 degrees F in turn, the Sherwin-Williams data sheet for ArmorSeal 1000 HS (revised August 10, 2021), for a 6.0 mil wet film, gives pot life (how long the mixed product stays usable) as 6 hours and 4 hours, the minimum wait before recoating as 24 hours and 8 hours (the maximum is 7 days), foot traffic as 48 hours and 24 hours, heavy traffic as 4-5 days and 48-72 hours, and full cure as 10 days and 7 days. The ArmorSeal sheet requires 50 degrees F or warmer, at least 5 degrees F above the dew point, and 85% relative humidity or less. Westcoat's sheet for its EC-36 epoxy (8/23 revision) gives a pot life of 40 minutes, foot traffic at 8 hours and wheel traffic at 72 hours, all at 72 degrees F. NOAA's 1991-2020 normals for Centerport, inside the Town of Huntington, give a normal January high of 37.9 degrees F and a normal count of 4.5 January days that reach 50.

By our subtraction, NOAA's 2006-2020 hourly normals for Farmingdale Airport, outside the Town, put the mid-October air temperature 6.3 degrees F above the dew point at 7 a.m. standard time and 17.1 degrees F above it at 2 p.m. Those are outdoor readings, not slab or garage temperatures, so we check the air and slab temperature and the dew point before we mix. Sherwin-Williams does not recommend warming the room with fuel-burning heaters: they add moisture and carbon dioxide, "increasing the opportunity for blushing", a waxy film on the surface.

What a consumer kit's own data sheet asks of you

A DIY epoxy garage floor kit has a data sheet of its own, and that sheet sets conditions on the slab, the weather and the clock. Rust-Oleum's technical data ESH-39 (Rev. 050418) says its EpoxyShield water-based garage kit is for garage floors "that are in good sound condition and are free of curing agents and sealers", and that it "is not intended for use on unsound previous coatings or floors that have a moisture problem". ESH-39 also gives coverage of approximately 250 square feet per pouch; a dry film of 3.0-3.5 mils at 52.6-52.8% solids by volume (the share of the wet coating that stays as film); air, material and surface temperatures between 60 and 85 degrees F, with the surface at least 5 degrees F above the dew point and relative humidity no greater than 85%; a pot life that falls from 2 hours at 60-70 degrees F to 1 hour at 81-85 degrees F; and light foot traffic in 12-16 hours, with vehicle traffic after 3 days.

NOAA's 1991-2020 normals for Centerport count 0.6 January days reaching 60 degrees F outdoors, 14.8 in April and 26.6 in May. The taped plastic sheet check in Rust-Oleum's basement kit sheet, ESH-08, is a yes-or-no test: Sherwin-Williams Form G-1 says the plastic sheet method, ASTM D4263, "will indicate the presence of moisture movement, but it will not quantify the amount". Angi's August 2026 cost page says most epoxy products need a prep method, which "can include acid washing, power washing, or etching". Wolverine Coatings' bulletin says acid etching "will normally yield a CSP1 profile and is typically only used for very thin coatings".

A DIY kit, or epoxy flooring installation you hire

This is the choice behind a search for how to epoxy a garage floor. The two routes differ in how the slab is prepared and how thick the film is. Four things decide between them: the moisture reading, the temperature the room can hold, the use of the room and how soon you need it back.

A two-part kit, applied yourself

What it is: a water-based two-part epoxy sold in pouches, such as the EpoxyShield kit above. What the data says: a dry film of 3.0-3.5 mils (Rust-Oleum ESH-39) and $200 to $700 for premade kits (HomeGuide, February 2026, national). Who it suits: an owner with a sound, dry, bare slab, a garage inside the kit's temperature range, and the days to empty, prepare, coat and wait. The downsides of a thin film are in our guide to epoxy flooring pros and cons.

An installed system on a diamond-ground slab

What it is: a slab tested for moisture and ground to the profile on the system's data sheet, then primed, coated, broadcast and topcoated by epoxy flooring installers. What the data says: a base coat of 10 to 12 mils alone in Sherwin-Williams' Deco Flake SB instructions, and $4 to $10 per square foot installed (HomeGuide, February 2026, national). Who it suits: a slab that fails one of the checks above, or an owner who wants the thicker build and a written contract.

Questions

Epoxy Floor Installation FAQs

Can I epoxy a garage floor myself?

Yes, if the slab is sound, dry and bare and the garage is inside the kit's temperature range when you apply it. Rust-Oleum's technical data ESH-39 for its EpoxyShield garage kit asks for a floor "in good sound condition" and "free of curing agents and sealers", rules out floors "that have a moisture problem", and sets air, material and surface temperatures between 60 and 85 degrees F. Fast-curing polyaspartic coatings are another matter: Concrete Decor magazine (June/July 2009) wrote, "This is not a do-it-yourself product"; see our polyaspartic floor coating page.

How hard is it to install an epoxy floor?

The coating is the short part; the preparation and the clock are the hard parts. Mixed epoxy must be placed inside its pot life: 1 to 2 hours for the EpoxyShield water-based kit, depending on temperature (Rust-Oleum ESH-39), and 40 minutes at 72 degrees F for Westcoat's 100% solids EC-36. Sherwin-Williams traces a coating that stays gummy to a wrong ratio of the two parts or to mixing that was not thorough. A full flake broadcast takes a crew: Laticrete's TDS 432 has "a third person on spikes" throwing chips into the wet resin.

How much epoxy for a 1000 sq ft floor?

Between about three and eight gallons a coat, depending on film thickness; that is our arithmetic from printed coverage rates. Sherwin-Williams' data sheet for ArmorSeal 1000 HS gives 206 to 350 square feet per gallon at 3.0 to 5.0 mils dry, so 1,000 square feet takes roughly three to five gallons a coat. The 10 to 12 mil base coat in Sherwin-Williams' Deco Flake SB instructions covers 133 to 160 square feet per gallon, so about six to eight gallons. One EpoxyShield kit pouch covers approximately 250 square feet (Rust-Oleum ESH-39), so four pouches.

How long does new concrete need to cure before epoxy?

At least 28 days by Sherwin-Williams' rule, and sometimes longer. Sherwin-Williams' article on blistering says concrete "must cure for a minimum of 28 days" before an epoxy or urethane flooring system, and its Form G-1 adds that 28 days may not be enough for excess moisture to leave the slab. This Old House's cost page (updated March 2026) says the surface must be at least 60 days old. The calendar gives the earliest date; a moisture test settles it.

How do I get rid of leftover two-part epoxy in Huntington?

Not through New York's paint drop-off program, and the Town's accepted list does not name epoxy, so call the Town before you bring it. PaintCare, which runs the State program, lists 2-component coatings and epoxies among products it does not accept. The Town of Huntington's household hazardous waste facility at 641 New York Avenue takes residents' waste with proof of residency, five gallons maximum per visit; its list names adhesives, solvents and flammable liquids, and it refuses commercially generated waste. When we install a floor, the waste leaves with us, as Town Code section 133-1 requires of anyone doing home improvements for pay.
